Form eines Vogels

1800 - 1625 v. Chr.

This small jug is a popular type of white painted ware III--V string-hole style, and has been found in many graves. The pressed body of the bird-shaped askos has a flattened bottom and angular, carinated, slightly rounded shoulders. A short, slanted, conical neck with spout is on the front edge of the upper side, opposite the beginning of the tail. The pierced handle once on the middle of the back is missing today. Simple string-holes are on the side of the neck, there are double string-holes on opposite sides of the shoulder’s edge. Painted red-brown decoration: the upper side of the askos is separated into two fields with a lattice pattern by two parallel lines between the spout and tail; circumambient line around the edge of the shoulder; below it and on the edge of the base respectively is a circumambient wavy line. Circumambient parallel horizontal lines on the neck. The edge of the spout and the string-holes are outlined. This askos, a clay model of a leather pouch or bag in clay, has a long, recognized tradition on Cyprus in various shapes. Its shape is reminiscent of vases in the form of birds.
