Bänder mit Ritzornamenten

1625 - 1450 v. Chr.

This jug is an example of Late Bronze Age base-ring ware, which differed from previous types of pottery in its new formal elements (base-ring) and decoration and which also spread far beyond the boundaries of Cyprus. Large jugs with a lip or spout are the preferred types of vessels. The jug has an ovoid body on a low, concave, curved foot and a carinated, cylindrical neck with spreading lip and a large, slanted spout. A broad, vertical band handle extends from the shoulder to the lip. Sculptural bands with incised ornaments are characteristic decoration of this style: on the side of the body, axially arranged, vertical relief bands with incised herring-bone pattern; on the front of the body two parallel bands with slanted strokes. At the base of the neck, a horizontal relief band with slanted strokes, which continues vertically onto the shoulder in the area of the handle base. In the upper half of the neck, a circumambient horizontal band in a herring-bone pattern. The top side of the handle is divided in two by a vertical incised line; in the upper half, a herring-bone pattern.
