Sitzender Affe

6. Jh. v. Chr.

Figurine of a monkey. Wheel-made, bell-shaped, partly fragmentary body. Torso and head are handmade. Oblong face with pellet ears. Head and muzzle painted red. Both forelegs are bent against the chest. Horizontal black band around waist, alternating groups of vertical bands in black and red paint below waist. Black bands across forelegs. Hole on one side below left foreleg for movable hind legs (?).Monkey figurines were well-known in the coroplastic art of Cyprus from the Late Cypriote period onwards. They appear quite frequently in the Cypro-Archaic period. The perforation beneath the left arm was probably intended for the fixing of a clapper. Such figurines were used as toys.
