Salome with the Head of John the Baptist

Salome, daughter of Herodias, is depicted here shortly before handing over the head of John the Baptist to her mother and Herod. Light illuminates the figure of the melancholy looking girl, whose beauty and elegance is emphasised by means of thickly applied and soft brush-strokes. It is assumed that one of Titian’s late works is the model for this painting, which Palma had perhaps been able to admire in the collection of the Venetian Bartolomeo della Nave.
