Young Woman in Blue Dress with Fan

Palma was famous for his depictions of beautiful women presented in different ways and in various roles. The artist was concerned here with idealising female beauty with a predominately erotic touch. The decorative side of her beauty is stressed while the actual character of hair, skin-colour and material are created in a way that is alienating. Emphasising the external features distinguishes Palma‘s “beautiful women” from those of Titian whose female figures also appear to glow with inner radiation.
