The museum as an employer

The KHM-Museumsverband is an alliance of museums and collections spanning 5,000 years of cultural history and ranks among the most renowned cultural institutions in Europe.

Its core tasks include the conservation, research, and presentation of these collections. To preserve this significant cultural heritage of the region and make it accessible to a wide public, high-calibre exhibitions and educational programmes are organised, and research projects are carried out.

The KHM-Museumsverband is part of the Austrian Federal Museums (Österreichische Bundesmuseen) and comprises three museums (the Kunsthistorisches Museum, the Weltmuseum Wien, and the Theatermuseum) and seven further collections (the Ephesos Museum, the Imperial Armoury, the Collection of Historic Musical Instruments, the Imperial Treasury, Ambras Castle Innsbruck, the Imperial Carriage Museum, and the Theseus Temple). These are spread across a total of seven locations in Vienna and Innsbruck.

Our aim is to promote understanding and appreciation of art, culture, and science and to contribute to the international cultural landscape.

Once we have received your application, you will receive a confirmation of receipt. Our recruiters will review your documents and forward them to the relevant department. If your profile matches our requirements, we will invite you to an initial interview, which will take place either in person or online. The entire process usually takes two–four weeks.

Our recruitment process

Yes, you can apply for several positions that match your profile and interests. We recommend that you tailor each application specifically to the role in question to highlight your motivation.

We recommend that you apply anyway if you believe your experience and skills are a good fit for the role. In many cases, the requirements are flexible, and we value individual competencies.

This depends on the role. As a rule, we ask our applicants to provide a current CV and a cover letter. If the job advertisement specifies that further documents such as a portfolio, concepts, or certificates are required, we will explicitly state this.

The cover letter should be tailored to the specific role. Describe why you are interested in this position and what qualifications and experience you bring to the table. Try to be concise – one page in length is ideal.

To maximise your chances, you should avoid the following:

  2. Generic cover letters with no reference to the advertised role
  3. Incorrect or out-of-date contact details
  4. Spelling and grammar mistakes
  5. Inadequate preparation for the interview

Yes, you can submit missing documents at a later date. Please email the documents directly to the recruitment team, stating the job title.

Yes, we welcome unsolicited applications! Please send us a detailed application by email to karriere@khm.at. Please be sure to let us know which area you would like to work in, and we will check whether your qualifications match any of our future vacancies.

Interview

The interview is an opportunity for us to get to know each other. It takes place either in person on-site or remotely via video conference. As a rule, a recruiter and a representative from the relevant department will be present. You will have the chance to find out more about the role, the team, and our company culture, and to ask any questions you may have.

Our recruitment process

Yes, if required for the role, interviews may be conducted entirely or partly in English or other relevant languages. This will be agreed with you in advance.

ECHOCAST standard in Guest Services

The KHM-Museumsverband applies the EU quality standard ‘ECHOCAST’ to ensure a professional and motivated visitor service. All staff at the ticket offices, in the shops, at visitor information, and on gallery supervision duty are trained and certified in customer service and safety.
