Violin

This violin is one of the last instruments created by Geissenhof, who died on 1 January 1821. It emerges from his will that he passed away without means and leaving behind significant debts. According to information from his widow, medical costs were responsible for the poor financial situation of the best luthier in Vienna. His last instruments, however, show no trace of diminished ability to work. They are absolute masterpieces and, in contrast to his earlier works, are distinguished by a transparent and luminous varnish. (rh)
