Tod Mariens

1. Hälfte 16. Jahrhundert

The illustrations of Mary’s Death go back to the Homily of John of Thessalonike and the »Legenda aurea« of Jacopus de Voragine. Following the legend, the apostles were taken to Mary’s house by supernatural force from all their domains to support her in the hour of death. Mary is sitting in the middle of the praying apostles. As usual in late medieval group portraits the persons are arranged as a relief on top of each other. The dresses are set in gold, which accentuates the impressive heads.
