The portrait depicts a naked man wearing a red hat and a collar following the Spanish fashion, lying on a table. His disability can be diagnosed as congenital joint contractures (Arthrogryposis Multiplex Congenita). As over the right shoulder remnants have survived, previously a red sheet of paper hang over the painting to curtain the body. It could be lifted for viewing. In the background, a Kunstkammer furniture of the time can be seen. Thus, the man was already presented in the setting in which the picture

was intended to become an object of study.
