Lira da gamba (lirone)
ca. 1590 | Wendelin Tiefenbrucker
Wendelin Tiefenbrucker is above all known as a lute maker, yet he must have also produced a number of string instruments. The lira da gamba was only popular for a short time, and was primarily employed as an accompanying instrument. In order to facilitate the bowing of individual strings, string instruments commonly have a strongly curved bridge. This is in contrast to the lira da gamba which has a very flat bridge to allow the bowing of a number of strings at once, enabling the playing of chords. (bd)
