Violin

after 1650 | Jacob Stainer

Jacob Stainer was born in Absam in Tyrol. As the relevant parish records are missing, it has not yet been possible to establish his date of birth. Evidence from a letter written by Stainer suggests that he was born between 1618 and 1619. Nothing is known about his youth or apprenticeship. Stylistic characteristics of his violins suggest that he spent at least some of his apprentice years in Italy, possibly in the workshop of Nicolò Amati. According to account books and inventories, he was active as a violin maker in various towns in the Austrian region from 1644. However, no instruments from this period survive. (rh)
