Stehende Frau

um 500 v. Chr.

Figurine of a standing, draped female figure. Mold-made, hollow, with a large hole at the back. Back side plain. Made from a rather worn mold. A very popular type of female terra-cotta figurine. They are hollow, mold-made, heavily draped and richly decorated with jewelry on their ears and around their neck, as well as with seals, indicating perhaps their hieratic character. They usually have both arms bent to support their breasts. This type was found in large numbers in a sanctuary of the end of the sixth century B. C. at Achna. The figure is often identified as a priestess of Artemis, but this is by no means certain.
