Polosfragment

1. - 3. Jh. n. Chr.

The fragment shows a piece of the roof of a small temple and was initially interpreted as an architectural model. Very probably, however, it is part of a "polos", the solemn, towering headdress with which the cult image of Artemis of Ephesus was adorned. The crowning is a small temple and probably means the Artemision, the sanctuary of the goddess, which was considered one of the Seven Wonders of the World in antiquity.
