Statuettentorso: Aphrodite von Aphrodisias

1. - 3. Jh. n. Chr.

Much like Cybele and the Ephesian Artemis, a mother goddess was venerated as Aphrodite at Aphrodisias (Turkey). She, too, wears a close-fitting robe and a decorated apron (ependytes). On it, Aphrodite is depicted in a characteristic pose astride a sea creature; below her are three cupids holding hands. This artefact may belong to the fragment of a torso found at Ephesus that is now in the museum at Selçuk.
