Schaller, Rennhut, Helm

um 1480

The special streamlined helmet worn for the Joust of war (Rennen), referred to as a tournament helmet or »sallet«, reflects the late Gothic fashion that prevailed in the era of Emperor Maximilian I. Narrow eye slits allowed sufficient light in while providing optimal protection against injuries. A layer of padding was fastened via hanging loops to the rivets on the inside of the helmet. A slot at the top of the ridge was used to attach the crest, which would often be of a fanciful design.
