Statuette, Bronze, Kleinbronze, Aktäon, Brunnenfigur, Brunnenbekrönung

3. Viertel 16. Jahrhundert | Wenzel Jamnitzer

The bronze statuette with a dear head shows Aktaeon, who had unintentionally cought the goddess Diana bathing in the woods. She didn’t want him to boast about having seen her naked, so she changed him into a deer. Thereupon he was killed by his own hunting dogs. The small bronze has water jets and outlets which conclude the function being part of a (inner) fountain or a monumental fountain. The goldsmith Wenzel Jamnitzer left a number of draft drawings for such water constructions.
