Cabinet

ca. 1560/70 | Wenzel Jamnitzer

Cabinets to store small objets d’art evolved from a type of furniture that was also still young in the 16th century: the writing cabinet. The front of this cabinet was originally protected by a board that folded down to serve both as a shelf and a writing table. Reliefs with allegories of virtues and vices adorn its numerous drawers.
