The sculptor, who came from the Netherlands, entered the service of Emperor Maximilian II in 1569 and in Nuremberg worked with Wenzel Jamnitzer on the Silver Fountain (Room 28). That the figure of Luna was also designed for a table fountain is evident from the pipe in her head. Mercury is not depicted in flight, as in the statue by Giambologna, but in a traditional posture, informed by the Apollo Belvedere of antiquity.
