Hans von Rechberg

1461/64 | Schwäbisch

This early German portrait shows the strong determination of 15th century artists to depict by means of realism. The painter intends to create a portrait that is true to life using simple means and thus places the physiognomy of the subject portrayed in front of a plain, coloured background. The person portrayed was a Swabian knight (c. 1410 – 1464) who participated in numerous campaigns in the alternating services of the Habsburgs and the Dukes of Württemberg, and who built up the domination of Schramberg in the Black Forest; his identity is assured by the inscription.
