Höhenmessgerät, wissenschaftliches Instrument, Meßgerät

um 1585 | Wenzel Jamnitzer

The “altimeter“ was invented by Wenzel Jamnitzer who had been a goldsmith in Nürnberg since 1534. He got jobs from Emperor Maximilian II, Rudolf II and Archduke Ferdinand II. In 1585 he described the new instrument by hand: it was made of a wooden foursided stick and a rotating gilded copper sphere, that indicated the altitude angle.
