The horse was made of gilded bronze and is mentioned in the inventory of the estate of Archduke Ferdinand II in 1596. The horse was one of the favourite animal statues in the Renaissance. It is modelled on the Hellenic horses of San Marco in Venice and the horse of the equestrian statue of Marc Aurel in Rome.
