Christus am Ölberg

um 1730 | Sebastiano Ricci

In the night of his arrest on Mount Olive, Christ is tormented by fear of death and prays that intense suffering may pass him by. An angel appears while His escort sleeps and offers Him solace. Ricci, founder of rococo painting in Venice, created here a charming nocturnal, tmospheric picture which, in spite of the serious theme, combines the old Venetian tradition of a lyrical landscape with figures of typically rococo brightness and exhilaration.
