Interior of the Jesuit Church in Antwerp

about 1630 | Sebastian Vrancx

The painting depicts the interior of Antwerp’s large Jesuit Church, the way it looked from its consecration in 1621 until the devastating fire of 1718. Rubens was extensively involved in the design of the interior. With the help of his studio he created works including the two large altarpieces with St. Ignatius von Loyola (recognisable in the picture) and St. Francis Xavier (Inv. Nos. 517, 519) as well as the altar-piece for the Lady Chapel, The Assumption of the Virgin Mary. (Inv. No. GG 518).
