Emperor Joseph II with Grand Duke Pietro Leopoldo of Tuscany

1769–73 | Bernardino Regoli

The mosaic is modelled on a painted portrait that Pompeo Batoni created of Joseph II and his brother Pietro Leopoldo (Leopold II) during a visit of the two to Rome in 1769 (KHM, Paintings Gallery). Pope Clement XIV had the copy made in the papal mosaic workshop as a gift for the mother of the two, Maria Theresa. The powerful frame emphasizes the representative character of the work.
