St. Hieronymus

Perugino is one of the first Central Italian artists to experiment with complex oil glazing. Inspired by the Dutch and the Venetians, he studied amongst other things the reflection of light in the air and onwater and so set an example for the young Raphael. There are numerous variations of the composition of St. Hieronymus in a range of formats and with workshop participation to a greater or lesser extent. We can recognise Perugino’s own hand in the great artistic delicacy of the picture’s brushwork.
