St. Luke Painting the Madonna
about 1520 | Jan Gossaert, gen. Mabuse
Gossaert, who was one of the first Flemish painters to adopt the Roman style, is clearly at the turning point from Late Gothic to Renaissance style and includes both a Late-Gothic arrangement of the folds of fabric and Italian Quattrocento architecture in his painting. St. Luke is viewing his portrayal of the Madonna, which he has just completed with angelic help. She has appeared to the saint in a cloud. Depictions of the Madonna as a vision were unusual at this time in the Netherlands, suggesting that Gossaert’s composition was based on Italian forerunners.
