Fragment of relief with a butchering scene

5th Dynasty, ca. 2400 BC

This fragment of relief was squared up for reuse after the tomb or the tomb complex where it decorated a wall was destroyed in antiquity. The butchering of sacrificial animals was a frequently employed motif in the decoration of Old Kingdom tombs since offerings of meat played a role in rituals to benefit the dead.
