In the gallery inventory of 1772 mention is made of a painted identified as “Johann Goßart painted by himself”, but it remains unclear whether that was a reference to this painting. The key to identifying the portrait subject may be his signetring with its clearly visible monogram, but it has not been possible thus far to interpret it.
