Mary with the Child

about 1525/27 | Jan Gossaert, gen. Mabuse

The Latin inscription in the arch of the stone niche quotes from the Old Testament Book of Genesis, in which God curses the serpent after the Fall of Man: “I will put enmity between thee and the woman, and between thy seed and her seed [...].” But the Christian interpretation includes a Humanist undertone: the Christ child represents the young Hercules who killed the snake. Hercules as a heathen prototype of Christ was a popular theme in the Renaissance.
