Christ Heals the Sick at the Pool of Bethesda

1st half of the 17th century | Pedro de Orrente

Due to his training in Venice at Bassani’s workshop, Pedro de Orrente is an important conveyor of Venetian realism to Spain at the end of the 16th Century. In his later period, Orrente blends his painting with stylistic elements of Caravaggio. The picture may be identical with a version of Orrente’s which is already listed in the collection of Almirante de Castilla in 1691. It may have reached Vienna via the (then) Spanish King Charles III, who acquired 200 paintings from this collection in 1705.
