Isabella of Bourbon

around 1628/29 | Peter Paul Rubens

During his stay in Madrid in 1628-29, Rubens produced several portraits of the royal family, including two of Isabella of Bourbon (1602–1644) that have been handed down to us in a number of copies. Isabella was the first wife of King Philip IV of Spain and the daughter of Henry IV of France and Marie de Médicis. This half-length study radiates a somewhat private quality, showing various levels of completion with only the head and bust largely finished.
