Archduke Albert VII

Albert VII (1559–1621), the son of Emperor Maximilian II and the Infanta Maria (a sister of King Philip II of Spain) was raised at the Spanish court and destined for a career in the church. Appointed governor of the Netherlands in 1595, he married Infanta Isabella Clara Eugenia, the daughter of the Spanish king. The couple became the sovereign regents of the Spanish Netherlands, and following the conclusion of an armistice in 1609, their reign was marked by peace and prosperity. They commissioned numerous works from Rubens, who was court painter.
