The Holy Family Beneath an Apple Tree
1630/32 | Peter Paul Rubens
Originally these two panels (now connected) were the two outer side panels of the Ildefonso Altar (Inv. No. GG 678), which the regent of the Netherlands, Infanta Isabella Clara Eugenia, commissioned for the church of St. James on the Coudenberg in Brussels. The Holy Family is being visited by the young boy St. John the Baptist and his parents. In contrast to the heightened sacred sphere of the inside panels of the altar, this is an almost earthly family idyll.
