The Visitation of Mary

about 1696 | Luca Giordano

Giordano was famous for the speed with which he executed his commissions. But particularly in the late works he painted in Spain, he took special care with his classicising, balanced compositions and precise drawing as well as the subtle, fluid and painterly attention to detail in the figures. The composition of the present painting is based on an engraving after Rubens’s Visitation for a side wing of the altar with the Descent from the Cross in Antwerp Cathedral.
