Mary with Child and the Saints Francis, Catherine and John

As a North Italian, Francia was not so schooled in the Florentine art of drawing as Perugino and so his figures appear slacker and flatter. Yet both artists were the true forerunners of the High Renaissance in Central Italy. While they increasingly turned away from the realistic tendencies of the Quattrocento in favour of an ideal notion of the world, they already approached the Classical style which was then to be perfected by Raphael.
