The Fair

Around the mid-16th century the market scene developed in the Netherlands as an independent genre. Bassano adopted elements of it in his painting style by incorporating a confusing wealth of detail, lively depictions of scenes with buyers and sellers, a dense mixture of living and slaughtered animals, bowls and baskets, and fruit and vegetables laid out in front of the viewer. The existence of several versions of this subject from Bassano’s workshop indicates its extraordinary popularity.
