Deposition

around 1728 | Francesco Solimena

During the period of Austrian rule in Naples (1707–34) Prince Eugene of Savoy commissioned the leading Neapolitan painter of the day, Francesco Solimena, to create several pictures, among them the altarpiece for the chapel of his hunting lodge Schlosshof at the edge of the Marchfeld east of Vienna. Despite the liveliness of the many figures, Solimena was always able to give his compositions a solid structure, based on selfassured accents in the coloration and an organisation of the composition with decorative contrasts between light and dark, giving the bodies strong plasticity.
