Mary with Child and the Saints Mary Magdalene, Cecilia, Dorothy, Catherine and Augustine

De Crayer, who like Rubens ran a large workshop, painted this altar-piece for the church of Augustinian nuns in Brussels. He made use of the composition and standard figures in other works, too. In contrast to his role model Rubens, Crayer lends his figures a more sensitive expression, rather than the former’s heroic monumentality. The bright, pastel-type colouring gives the picture a merry and charming atmosphere.
