Christ and the Captain of Capharnaum

The pagan Captain of Capharnaum approaches Jesus and asks Him, with great belief in Christ’s authority, if He will heal his servant who is paralysed. Astonished at the pagan‘s belief, Christ cures the boy. The figures are put on a higher podium visible from below so that the Palladian background architecture appears cropped. Especially these scenes from the socalled “Buckingham Series” suggest that the picture was mounted at a higher point in a larger room.
