Portrait of a Young Man in Black

Previously this portrait of the deliberately ostentatious, elegantly dressed young man was seen as a youthful work by Veronese. The rather coarse brush-work and above all the lack of the fine, silvery surface lustre typical of Veronese’s art, argue against him being the originator. The suggestion that this could be the work of Carletto Caliari, Veronese’s son who worked in his father’s workshop, is not without foundation.
