Lot and his Daughters Flee from Sodom

Veronese reproduces a rarely depicted scene from the story of Lot: the Old Testament Book of Genesis tells of two men, angels of the Lord, who lead Lot, his wife and both his daughters out of Sodom, in order to protect them from the destruction of the city (which they themselves have brought about). In the background Lot’s wife has turned round – in violation of the men‘s command – and frozen into a salt pillar. Part of the so-called “Buckingham Series” and possibly the companion picture to the “Flight from Egypt” (Ottawa).
