For this theme, Veronese draws on an old Venetian tradition: Adam and Eve must cultivate the earth and breed animals; Abel is being breast-fed, Cain seems to be terrified by a goat. Veronese’s palette darkens in his late period; instead of bright, unbroken colours, the artist strives to achieve a “tone-in-tone” painting in which the gloomy landscape plays an important role, a style more embedded in the Venetian tradition.
