Adam

ca. 1495/1505 | Tilman Riemenschneider

As a consequence of the rediscovery of antiquity, the nude human body was also redefined in 15th century Italy: its representation was now characterized by idealised beauty and classical contraposto. North of the Alps, antique prototypes were lacking. Here, nudity continued to be connected almost exclusively with biblical subjects and the Christian-moralizing context of sinfulness, suffering and death.
