Tablet from the false door of Shepsi

6th Dynasty, ca. 2374–2191 BC

Shepsi, an inspector of builders, and Neferwaut-es, his wife, are shown on the false door tablet seated before a table to receive the offerings depicted on it in the context of the funerary offering ritual. The ewer in a basin at the left end of the shelf alludes to the ritual washing hands that preceded the offering ceremony. In the lowest register the couple’s five children are shown.
