False door of Anchet

6th Dynasty, ca. 2200 BC

The false door was an imaginary gateway at the cult place of the tomb linking the hereand-now with the Hereafter. The soul of the deceased passed symbolically through it to partake of the offerings. The central motif of the decoration is the panel set into the false door bearing a scene of the tomb owner seated at table.
