Portrait of a Dignitary

This splendid depiction of a man – dangerously close with his head turned away – veers between violence and passivity, between tension and melancholy. The bulky figure was long identified as Malatesta Baglione (1491–1531), the famous general in the service of the Florentine Republic who had played a dubious role in the defence of the city in 1530 and was subsequently charged with treason.
