Saint Mary Appears to the Saints Jacob and Anthony of Egypt

around 1623/24 | Giovanni Lanfranco

Lanfranco painted the altarpiece for a side chapel of the Church of Santa Marta in the Vatican in Rome. The compositional devices of asymmetry and the diagonals, the abrupt change of perspective, the contrasting gestures and the restless lighting communicate great emotionality and drama to the viewer, even given the rather undramatic subject. The impression of emotional agitation is characteristic of a picture on the threshold to the Roman High Baroque.
