Portrait of a Man with a Book

Although Catena is described on the reverse side of Giorgione’s “Laura” (Inv.-Nr. GG 31) as his “cholega”, stylistically he belongs to the older generation of Giovanni Bellini. The clear angle of light, sharp contours, the way the hand’s bone structure is treated and the clear contrast in local colours are all characteristics of his work. Catena had links to Venetian humanist circles who strongly promoted Giorgione. The subject portrayed here may have belonged to these circles.
