Madonna mit Kind, Mondsichelmadonna
vor 1500
The crescent moon is the symbol of the apocalyptic woman that appears in the apocalypse of St. John 12,1-18 and has been alluded to St. Mary since the twelfth century. In the middle of the crescent moon there is a Turk’s head with turban, which discloses Mary as victress over the most dangerous threat of Christianity at that time, the Turkish Empire. Mary hands Jesus a pomegranate as symbol of salvation, which is a reverse image of Eve, who handed Adam the apple of sin. The cast tin applications on the right sleeve and the neckline are a special rarity.
