Originally these statues were part of the winged altar of the late Gothic church of Pöggstall in Lower Austria, which were purchased for the collections of Ambras in the 19th century and now stand in the Österreichischen Galerie in the Belvedere. The expressive sculptures were influenced by Swabian artists and are quite reminiscent of works by Hans Multscher from Ulm. Very special are the intact back-plates with the original nails

Der Altar samt Figurenschmuck der ehem. Pfarrkirche Pöggstall wurden im 19. Jahrhundert für die k.k. Ambraser Sammlungen angekauft. Der Altar ist seit 1996 eine Dauerleihgabe des KHM an das Belvedere Wien; die beiden Figuren (Maria und Johannes) verblieben im Bestand von Schloss Ambras Innsbruck
